Wakeboarding trip

Last Sunday Myles and Dani went Wakeboarding as a Sunday activity. Dani showed the way already an accomplished boarder, Myles first learnt how to use the board on the bank before having a go at kneeboarding before progressing to standing and was soon wakeboarding in style. They both had a great time; thanks go to Mr Armstrong for organising and Mr Brownley and Miss Condon for taking the boys.

House Colours

It was my great pleasure to award Harry Cheesewright his House colours this week. A very good term on the tennis court, plus contributions to athletics has seen him round off a good year in Y13. Popular with many of the boys in Everett I have enjoyed his company in the House and was pleased to recognise his contributions to Everett over the last 5 years.

Congratulations to the following Everett pupils who will be awarded prizes on Speech Day, very well deserved for all their hard work.

Design and Technology Anna Proctor, History and Travel & Tourism Kit Bowerin,
Physical Education Michael Glover.

Senior House Tennis

Well done to the Senior House Tennis team, 2nd place in this week’s House Tennis competition.
The 1st pair of Kit Bowerin and Harry Cheesewright dominated the competition winning all four of their games 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, 4-2.
The 2nd pair of Myles Everett and Markus Grun fought hard all afternoon, having not played together this season they did really well in what was a very close fought 2nd pair competition, winning their game against Skipwith but narrowly losing the others. Overall a good team effort placed us in a well deserved 2nd place, just one point behind eventual winners Burr.

Y9 Everett Entrepreneurs

A car wash, shoeshine, Father’s Day cards and a host of food-based concepts are among the businesses springing up at Shiplake College run by entrepreneurial Y9 pupils.
Given a £10 note by Young Enterprise, for their Tenner competition, the aspiring moguls started up their businesses on 1st May. They have exactly one month to boost the bottom line.’
At the end of the month the load is repaid and it is suggested that £1 is paid to the Tenner Bank to fund next year’s competition: essentially a tax on profits. Corporation Tax hits at an early age nowadays.
Darius Bluck, Head of Economics and Business at Shiplake College and Everett tutor said, ‘The rules are simple. No loans, no gambling, no illegal activities. But best of all if the teacher says NO, then so do the rules.’

I am pleased to say Everett Y9 have all shown an interest in this competition, Everett businesses include shoe shining, selling ice creams and a snack and drink venture.

Everett Chapel Wardens

I am delighted to announce that Peter Baker and Freddie Lang have accepted Reverend Cousins invitation to be Everett House Chapel Wardens for 2012/13. I know they will both do a great job looking after the spiritual and pastoral needs of the House.

This is an important role in the House and school, much of what they do goes on 'behind the scenes', and a great number of pupils benefit from the support Chapel Wardens provide.

Athletics Standards success

Another great House effort this week in the second athletic standards afternoon. I was really pleased to see several Everett pupils; in particular Y9 having two or even three go’s at events to try and improve their score. One of the pictures below shows Greg Cooke, Will Urquhart, Hassan Rubbani and Marcus Colao all gaining an A in the same heat of the 400m! As a result of all the boys and girls efforts we came 2nd in the Senior Standards, 1st in the Junior and 2nd in the Girls. I look forward to next week’s championship event.

Ascension Day

Ascension day – bright and very early on Wednesday morning Everett Y13 leavers attended the Ascension day service, followed by a game of rounder’s at Maidensgrove. This now traditional annual event is a nice way for the Y13 leavers to round off the spiritual aspect of their College career amongst friends and teachers.

Enemy captured, invasion thwarted!

Invasion thwarted! This weeks CCF exercise saw Sjt Gus McCulloch as one of the section leaders for 1 Platoon Shiplake Rifles lead his men in the successful capture of an enemy reconnoitre patrol. The two sections included Lance Corporals Marsh, Chandler, Everett, Mottram and Rifleman van der Lely. Having been issued with rifles and blank rounds, they acted on intelligence that suggested an imminent large airborne invasion. Quickly dispersing into the 'New Field' battle zone they conducted two successful ambushes and discovered a map of enemy patrol routes which enabled the capture of the foe in further ambushes. The afternoons exercise was a great success, with Y11 to 13 showing the benefits of their training in a disciplined, cohesive and swift series of actions, using clear and effective communications. All the Everett cadets’ involved enjoyed the exercise, and are pictured below in action.

House Athletics

The first athletics standards took place last Thursday and I was really pleased with a great House effort, everyone gave of their best, and supported each other. This is one of the few occasions the whole House competes together and everyone played their part, from the fastest sprinters earning their A standards to those that gave of their all to complete the 800m as best they could to win points for the House.

House Colours

Today I was very pleased to be able to award two more deserving recipients their House colours. Olivia Peacock has this year built on the great foundation she laid in Y12; she has always contributed well to House sport, carried out her House duties well and although naturally quiet and reserved proven herself more than capable of holding her own on a duty night. Whether it’s running for the House in cross country and athletics, or rowing for the College and House and she has always given of her best in and out of the classroom. James Tolley also joined Everett in Y12 and quickly bought into the House ethos. His duty nights have always been commented on as being one of the best by visiting tutors, this year our trophy cabinet would be bare if it wasn’t for his big contribution in winning the senior cross country, he is often to be found in the gym, not being a big fan of rugby but has always turned out for house events. He would probably be the first to admit that he didn’t always get things quite right in his first months with us, but he has turned things around in and out of the classroom and along with Olivia deserves his House colours, well done to both.

Owl Tie

The Owl Tie is one of the most impressive awards a pupil at Shiplake can receive. Very few are awarded each year, as to receive one a pupil has to show outstanding contributions in not just one, but many areas of College life. Kit Bowerin was a well deserved recipient today in Senior Assembly, when presented by Mr Brown, Senior and College Housemaster, the words "impressive contribution and selflessness in everything that he does" reflected Kit's involvement in all aspects of Shiplake life. He gives of his best in the classroom, is a great Prefect and Head of House, and contributes fully to extra curricular activities, including rugby, tennis, DofE and CCF. Well done Kit from all in Everett House.
