House cross country

House Cross Country Standards and Championship – Thursday afternoon saw the whole House out on the new field for the cross country events. It was a bright sunny afternoon, if a little crisp, but good conditions compared to recent weeks. Because of the flooding the course had been diverted to the roads and lanes through Shiplake Village and the events shortened to just one afternoon’s competition, much to the relief of many! We did very well coming 2nd overall in all the standards and 3rd in the championship events. Particular mention to Guy Pollard who came 4th overall and 3rd in Y11, Tom Armstrong came 4th in Y9, with Bilal, Faan and Ben in top 20; Marcus Colao came 6th in Y10, Hassan 16th, Greg and Toby came 10th and 11th in Y11, Anthony and Jamie 4th and 5th in Y12, Emma 5th in the girls event and Gus 7th in Y13 with Peter and Oran in top 10.

Blooming early!

Despite the wet weather it has been unseasonably mild. Although I don’t expect the boys have noticed, it has resulted in the early blooming of snowdrops and primroses in the orchard, on the banks on the way to the river and behind Everett. A welcome splash of spring colour, although the primroses have been well munched by the slugs!

Bugsy Malone

The end part of the week saw the school production, two matinees and four evening performances was a big demand on the time of James Martin, Dom Marsh and Oscar Fagerstrom-Day. It was a brilliant production, hugely entertaining and I am really proud of all three. Mr Bluck our new resident tutor wrote the following review.
Shiplake College’s hugely successful annual performance came to an end this Saturday and we are delighted that James Martin, Dom Marsh and Oscar Fagerstrom-Day were all part of the act. The school have been preparing long and hard to perform Bugsy Malone to staff, parents and the local community. James, who played Leroy Smith – ‘the man with the awesome punch,’ fights off muggers, trains as a fighter and ultimately ends up saving Bugsy Malone by locating the splurge guns. Dom was given sole responsibility for lighting the performance and ended up installing over 25 lights! Oscar, who played Looney Bergonzi, was splurged to death and can be seen in the attached link, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z7Cvgt-z6A&feature=youtu.be. It was another outstanding performance by Shiplake College and we are incredibly proud of James, Dom and Oscar for their involvement.

Netball - Lucy and Annabel play well for the U18 1st VII

The girls had their first match of the term on Wednesday against Sir William Borlase, despite losing in the final quarter the girls played very well and were in the lead at half time following an excellent second quarter. Everett girls Annabel Seward and Lucy Collings were in the team, coach Miss Porter was pleased with both of their performances but in particular singled out Lucy’s excellent play at wing defence.

Football and Hockey

Today the football season got off to a great start. Congratulations to Freddie Ireland who was appointed Captain of the 1st XI and he led them to a great victory over LVS Ascot, a 5-4 win. Also selected for the 1st team were Charlie Proctor, Markus Grun and Luke Wilkinson. Markus scored 2 goals and Freddie had 3 assists. Will Clarke played well for the 2nd XI in a tight game, going down 1-3.

Everett were also well represented on the hockey pitches, in the 1st XI Myles Everett and Rory O’Conor played in a very competitive game against Lord Wandsworth College, coach Mr Fitton said they both played their part in a fast, free flowing fixture which ended in a 0-0 draw, a good result against tough opposition. Anthony Miarli, Chris Baker and Oran Mehmet played in another tight game for the 2nd XI losing 2-0. Everett pupils played in every fixture against Lord Wandsworth, a good hockey school, although there were no victories they all played well and the number of pupils involved from the House bodes well for the House hockey competition.  Kieran Leach 3rd XI;   Oscar Fagerstrom-Day and Charlie Ward U15B XI; Joseph Gilbert-Blay and Ben Tracey U14A, Bilal Akeil and Harvey Ward U14B XI.

Parakeets

Despite the miserable grey weather we did have a splash of colour this week with a visit by a flock of parakeets to the orchard outside Everett and in my garden!

UK Senior mathematical challenge

In Senior assembly on Wednesday morning the Headmaster gave out certificates for the UK Senior Mathematical Challenge. Over 75000 pupils entered and I was very pleased to see Jamie Mottram and Freddie Ireland receive awards. This meant they came in the top 10% of all the UK entries. Jamie received a Bronze certificate and Freddie Ireland a Silver certificate, Freddie also received certificates for best in year and for the top performer in the school, well done to both.
