Matthew Hoggard visits Shiplake College Cricket Club

Cricket – Milo Taylor 1st XI, Rory O’Conor U15A, Charlie Ward and Oscar Fagerstrom-Day U14B have all been playing well for the school this term.

This week Matthew Hoggard MBE visited Shiplake College cricket club and Rory and Milo were lucky enough to spend time with him as he shared some of the wisdom gained from taking 248 wickets in his 67 tests for England and years spent playing for Yorkshire and subsequently captaining Leicestershire. Talking to Everett tutor and U14 XI cricket coach Mike Edwards he recounted fond memories of his time with England, Flintoff’s humour in the changing room, a ball that whizzed past his nose from Courtney Walsh as his welcome to Test cricket and working hard on his defensive technique with his ‘batting buddy’ Marcus Trescothick. The England swing bowler recalled how he had learnt his trade beginning with Pudsey Cricket Club in their 3rd Xl and it was only when he was 17 that Hoggard eventually joined the Yorkshire set-up, an inspiration to late-developing sportsmen and a lesson to all our boys that hard work and determination are needed alongside talent to succeed in any field of life. Rory is pictured below with Matthew Hoggard and Milo on his way out to bat for the 1st XI v Oratory this week.
