Goodbye J

Chris Bakers excellent effort in the classroom and with prep was recognised by an SCR prize the Matthew Bevin Cup for the most industrious Y11 pupil. All in all another evening which made me proud to be associated with the girls and boys of Everett House.

Head Of House

Always one of the hardest decisions as a Housemaster to make, with strong candidates, all with a good set of skills it was always going to be a tough choice. So I was delighted to announce at the Everett end of term meal

Anthony Miarli as Head of House for 2014-15.

I wish him well next year in a role I know he will make his own and do a fantastic job of.

Fane Award - an award for a Y9 pupil who is a true House man, a good character and who fully involves themselves in all aspects of school life and House life, this year goes to a deserving winner Faan Tsang.

Premier League Trophy visits Shiplake

The Barclays Premier League trophy came to Shiplake on Tuesday together with a raffle for a signed Chelsea ball gave the boys a photo opportunity and chance to raise money for our school charities. Pictured below are Y10 with new Everett Housemaster Mr Armstrong.

Athletics Championships - Seniors WIN !

House Athletic Championships – on a very warm Tuesday morning Everett took to the athletics track intent on making their mark. There were too many people involved to name them all, but we did have a number of medal winners. Overall the Juniors came 4th, but the Seniors won their Championship Event Well Done!

The Tug of War was a tough competition and we came a respectable 3rd against much bigger Houses.

TVP regatta

TVP – at this local regatta Emma Haynes, Josh Hirst, Marcus Colao and Tom Mottram were all involved, pictured below are the two winning quads.

Summer Concert

Last night we had the Summer Concert, a fantastic evening with a real mix of musical styles and instruments. Chris Baker sang and played in the Chamber choir, Samba band, Senior Orchestra and combined Orchestra, again proving what a talented musician and singer he is. Eleanor Waite provided excellent accompaniment on piano in the Motown Bands rendition of ‘You can get it if you really want’. Lucy Collings produced an assured and faultless performance of Demons by the Imagine Dragons that had a well deserved cheer and huge round of applause form the crowd, a lovely voice which she also show cased with the Chamber Choir. Mr Brownley provided the Everett tutor contribution performing a Queen classic with the Staff choir.  Darien Patel showed his percussion talents with the Samba band. However the most contributions came from Josh Hirst who blew, drummed and sang his way through the evening in just about every performance – Saxophone group, Chamber choir, Barbershop boys, Funk band, Samba band, Clarinet quartet, backing the Saxophone, and both Senior and combined Orchestra. Well done Josh.

Athletics Awards

Y9 have been partaking in English Schools Athletics Association awards this term, well done to Joseph Gilbert-Blay who earned a Bronze certificate in Quadrathlon, Benjie Tracey a Bronze in Pentathlon and Jake Ward a Silver in Pentathlon.

Y9 Adventure week

In the last full week of term the Y9 enjoyed a fun filled busy Adventure week programme. On Monday they navigated their way to Marlow following the Thames path for much of the way, then camped overnight at Longridge, cooking their own food. This was followed by a days sailing at Dinton Pastures. On their return to Shiplake they followed a two day programme of activities including survival skills, mountain biking, canoeing, kayaking, orienteering, archery and raft building. They all got stuck in and seemed to really enjoy it.

Senior tennis - 3rd

On Thursday afternoon the Senior Tennis competition took place, with several of our normal tennis players at home or off games, I was pleased and grateful to the four Y12 who volunteered to give it a go. The second pair of Anthony Miarli and Will Clarke surprised themselves, although reticent at first they took to the afternoon’s competition, playing really well and enjoying it. The first pair of Freddie Ireland and Charlie Proctor was a real revelation, they won 3 out of 4 matches and the one they lost was a close fought affair, overall we came joint third with Burr, Orchard came second, Skipwith won, a great effort as other Houses had Senior tennis club players representing them on court.

Rowing Awards

On Thursday night the Boat club held their Dinner and Awards night. It was great to see that so many Everett boys and girls have been involved in rowing over the last two terms. Junior House Tennis - First Place (joint!)

This afternoon our Junior team captained by Benjie Tracey, partnering Hugh Rutledge in the 1st pair, together with Charlie Ward and Josh Towell in the 2nd pair took to the courts on a hot, sunny afternoon. The matches were played over shortened format of one set, best of 7 games. This was a close competition with all Houses fielding good players, but Everett put their stall out with both pairs winning their first two matches, Benjie and Hugh went on to lose just one match and came second in their event. Josh and Charlie won all their matches, a great effort. The Orchard pairings had the reverse results, so in the end it was a tie!

Marsh's Monsters row to victory

Last Saturday was a glorious afternoon and I enjoyed watching the Everett rowers compete in a very entertaining mixed crew regatta. All our rowers competed well, but it was nice to see Dom Marsh captain the winning crew – Marsh’s Monsters, Marcus Colao was also in this winning crew, Dom also went on to cox the 1st VIII to victory over the staff eight. More pictures of the event can be found at https://www.flickr.com//photos/shiplakecollege/sets/72157645106244354/show

Music Excellence

Last week I congratulated Josh and Eleanor on their performance in the scholars’ concert. I was pleased to see them mentioned this week on the College website. Eleanor’s piano playing was beautiful and Josh’s rendition of Menuetto Capriccio & Trio on the clarinet was one of the highlights of the evening and both Mr Jones and Mr Ham commented to me on how well they had both done in an evening full of great performances.

Junior House Cricket

Monday afternoon saw the Juniors take to the square for the Junior House cricket. We were drawn against Burr. Drawing on the ranks of the rowers to make up numbers, as several of our Y9 cricketers were playing tennis! Hassan Rubbani captained the squad well and also rotated the players, so as many as possible could get involved in the 7 a side 6 over format. Everett were put into bat first, Oscar and Kieran opened the batting, with an assured partnership, followed by Hassan and then Henry. We posted a total of 35 for 2. Burr came out to bat, but were initially held in check by good bowling from Josh and Kieran, Hassan organised the field well and some great fielding plus excellent wicket keeping from Oscar saw Burr lose an early wicket. Hassan bowled a tight over and then Henry caught and bowled another Burr batsman and things were looking promising. However Burr then brought on a strong batsman, despite tidy bowling by Darien, they crept towards our total, and we lost with 6 balls remaining. Well done to all who contributed either with bat, ball or in the field including Bilal, Josh T, Austin, Bill and Zach.

House Drama

Hot on the heels of the Y9 performance evening came the House drama competition on this afternoon. The boys had 2 hours to devise a short play using a prop of their choice. All of the boys were involved in the production but the brave five who stepped onto the boards were Hugh, Faan, Jake, Harvey and Bilal. Their piece revolved around ‘a red button’ that assured the destruction of Britain and how it came to be mistakenly pushed by cleaning lady Hugh, despite opposition from a gagged and bound Jake, the two evil conspirators Faan and Hugh (again!) managed to evade capture and detection by MI5 agents Harvey and Bilal. A funny and fast moving piece that prompted genuine laughter from the crowd, unfortunately the judges deemed other Houses to have performed slightly better, but we didn’t finish in last place, instead a strong fourth, very close behind third placed Skipwith, Burr came second and Orchard won.

Speech Day Prizes

This week the subject prizes to be awarded on speech day were announced. Congratulations to Greg Cooke who has been awarded the Theology and Philosophy and Mathematics GCSE prizes. Well done to Gus McCulloch who also scooped two prizes, Governors awards for Sixth Form studies in Product Design and Travel and Tourism. But especially well done to Freddie Lang who will be awarded three Governors prizes for Biology, Economics and Mathematics.

Y9 Drama Evening

Last night all year 9 Everett boys took part in a performance evening organised by the drama department. The boys were given a term to devise their own play; including costume and set design and lighting. The night consisted of 5 short sketches ranging from comedy to some more serious issues on human trafficking. Bilal's role as a female guest on the hit TV show Take Me Out was particularly amusing.

National School's Regatta

Well done to all the Everett rowers who competed at Nottingham. Tom Armstrong rowed in the J14 event on Friday, they made it to the semi finals but tough competition meant they didn’t progress to the final, but they rowed well. Our J15 rowers did themselves proud, Josh Hirst made the semi finals in the J15B VIII, Marcus Colao, Austin Burnand, Henry Birdsey and Tom Mottram came 4th in the J15A VIII final, just missing out on a medal. Marcus also made the final and again finished fourth in the J15B coxed quad. Particular congratulations go to those who brought home medals Dom Marsh, two Silver’s in the 1st VIII’s and Championship coxed IV; and Tom Mottram Bronze in the J15A coxed quad.

Senior House Cricket

Senior House cricket took place on a gloriously sunny Monday afternoon. The Everett team batted first and amassed a strong total, including a very impressive 25 not out in a single over, including 3 sixes from Captain Rory O’Conor who had to retire in this limited over game. We were pleased to welcome Eleanor, the first girl to play cricket for Everett, to the crease, who showed assured batting and good calling in her partnership with Charlie Proctor. Eleanor finished on 8 not out and Charlie 19 not out. Alex Sanderson also contributed to the run total. We also fielded and bowled well, a highlight being a wicket for James Martin off the first ball of his over, he went on to take 2 wickets for just 4 runs. However a mix up in fielding too many players at one point led to a run penalty, but even so we took Burr to the last ball of the last over, before they just clinched a narrow victory. Matthew even stepped up and took on a few balls from Burr’s Fili Savou.
