Senior House
cricket took place on a gloriously sunny Monday afternoon. The Everett team
batted first and amassed a strong total, including a very impressive 25 not out
in a single over, including 3 sixes from Captain Rory O’Conor who had to retire
in this limited over game. We were pleased to welcome Eleanor, the first girl to play
cricket for Everett, to the crease, who showed assured batting and good
calling in her partnership with Charlie Proctor. Eleanor finished on 8 not out
and Charlie 19 not out. Alex Sanderson also contributed to the run total. We
also fielded and bowled well, a highlight being a wicket for James Martin off
the first ball of his over, he went on to take 2 wickets for just 4 runs.
However a mix up in fielding too many players at one point led to a run
penalty, but even so we took Burr to the last ball of the last over, before
they just clinched a narrow victory. Matthew even stepped up and took on a few
balls from Burr’s Fili Savou.

House Chapel Wardens
Congratulations
to Jamie Mottram and Myles Smart Everett who have accepted Reverend Cousins
invitation to be Everett House Chapel Wardens for 2013/14. I know they
will both do a great job looking after the spiritual and pastoral needs of
the House. This is an important role in the House and school, much of what
they do goes on 'behind the scenes', and a great number of pupils benefit from
the support Chapel Wardens provide.

Green fingers
As part of their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award, Josh Hirst,
Austin Burnand, Darien Patel and Charlie Ward have spent this term setting up
an allotment in the Orchard. The first stages required the boys to build a
solid frame and to clear the land of any loose rocks and weeds – by no means an
easy task! The boys have decided to grow a variety of beans and are looking
forward to eating them at the end of the summer term. Darien has said he was
particularly surprised at just how much the seeds needed watering, particularly
with the recent sunshine. We look forward to watching the vegetables grow over
the coming weeks.
GCSE performing arts : Oscar helps bring the show to life
On Thursday afternoon the Performing Arts GCSE class
performed their own devised play, Look how far we’ve come. The play was
centred on two families going to fight for their country, one family set in
1914 France and the other family in 2012 Afghanistan. The play was both moving
and exceptionally well acted with a cast of just four actors. Oscar
Fagerstrom-Day was responsible for sounding and did an excellent job choosing
the music and timing the sound effects to bring the play to life! The play was
performed outside in the glorious sun and overlooking the river and was watched
by parents, staff and all year 9 and 10 borders.

House Colours
It was my
pleasure to award Mrs Davies her House colours on Thursday. She has been an excellent
tutor for Y11 and Y10 pupils, she supports House events and I know Everett is in
safe hands when she is on duty. Her colours were a well deserved recognition of
all she does for Everett.

Cricket excellence
There has been a lot of
great cricket played by the Everett boys this term, but of particular mention
two boys earned excellence slips for their efforts last Saturday against Bloxham
School. Mr Milburn took a side depleted by injury and unavailability away and
was really pleased with Bill Su who took two wickets in his first ever
competitive cricket match (in his first over, no less) and was on a hat trick
ball. Bilal Akeil formed a solid batting partnership with Kerim from Burr
and contributed excellently to a 35 run stand, with well thought and positive calling and
running. Well done to both.

Junior Athletics Standards
Junior Athletics
Standards were run on a lovely sunny afternoon. Despite a few boys missing
through injury, Y9 and 10 did us proud with some excellent running; Y9 all
scored A standards in the 100m sprint! Hassan Rubbani again showed he is one of
the fastest runners in the school, whilst Tom Mottram threw the shot putt the
furthest in Y10.
Internships for Business students Markus and Will
Well done to Markus Grun and Will Clarke full story by Mr Edwards below.
‘How big can Chattoo become?’ was one of the frequently
asked questions at the interviews for a Chattoo internship. Seb Brock, one of
the founders of Chattoo, had been impressed by the quality of Shiplake pupils’
questions and input at the recent product trials for the new app. He
subsequently invited applications for a 3 month internship.
‘It is a laid-back internship. We will not be contacting you
everyday but we want interns to act as a bridge between us and the market,’ Seb
told the interns just 24 hours after Chattoo had become available on the App
Store. ‘Sadly we are too old to be part of the target market. We need your
input and your feedback.’
Chattoo are going for a ‘soft launch’. No money has been
invested in advertising the app as yet. Over the coming months the company want
to develop the app’s functions and they are looking for ideas from the interns
on how they would like to see the app move forward.
With Chattoo’s inclusive approach the interns will be kept
informed of business objectives and strategy. Currently the company aim for
weekly growth of 10% as they aim to met the targets on their growth matrix. If
they can maintain that growth their business mentor believes that they should
be able to attract the investment capital which will fund a phase of serious
marketing involving technology blogs, television and appearances on stage at
events.
‘I can see benefits from using the app for a night out. I
would Chattoo my friends,’ said Markus Grun, introducing a new verb to the
English language.

Senior Athletics
standards – well done to all the Y11, 12 and 13 boys and girls who took part in
Friday’s events. Everyone competed in the 100, 200 and 400m and also two field
events – long jump and shot putt. Pictured below are Luke Wilkinson in the long
jump, Emma Haynes getting a pre run rendition of ‘Let it go’ by Sophie, Y13 in post
race contemplation and Matthew who came in a little way behind our Y12 in the
400m!
